Job Description

Job Title:        Youth Development Worker

Hours:             30 hrs per week       (evening and occasional weekend work)

Contract:       12 months fixed term (to be extended subject to funding)

Pay:                            £25,000- £27,000 p.a.  Pro Rata + 8% Pension

Holiday:         28 days Pro Rata inc. BH

Accountable to:  Youth Development Manager

Responsible for: Sessional & Trainee Youth Workers / Volunteers

 

Job purpose:

To assist the Youth Development Manager in developing Mary’s Employability Hub program, extending its reach and impact and to share responsibility for the delivery of youth club activities including supervision of sessional and trainee youth club staff.

Main Responsibilities

  1. To develop and coordinate the delivery of Mary’s Employability Hub activities
  2. To take a lead on the marketing and communication of activities in the youth club, targeting specific groups
  • To supervise the trainee youth workers (co-producers) and sessional staff
  1. To assist in the general delivery of the youth club activities and in the development of new projects and initiatives

Employability Hub

  • Provide employment, education and training advice and support to young people through the delivery of life skill, employability workshops and drop in sessions
  • To lead and motivate young people to participate in Employability based activities, to improve their employment prospects and opportunities
  • Develop, implement and coordinate a mentoring scheme alongside the Youth Development Manager
  • Develop, implement and monitor evaluation based tools to measure the impact of Employability based activities with the Youth Development Manager
  • Develop new partnerships with local business partners and external partners that will encourage the development of the Employability Hub
  • Contribute to the development of new projects and initiatives in the Employability Hub

Marketing and Communications 

  • Build relationships and liaise with youth networks, educational institutions and other external partners to raise the profile of Mary’s youth club in the community, targeting specific groups and encouraging new members
  • Develop regular and up to date marketing content for social media, the website and internal communications in the youth club
  • Carry out outreach in the local community, particularly amongst young people not in employment, education or training.

 

Youth Club Delivery

  • Carry out face to face work with young people and support the delivery of youth club sessions
  • Help to develop new projects and Initiatives in the youth club with the Youth Development Manager
  • Support our co-production model and develop young people to become active members of Mary’s youth club involved in the design, planning and delivery of the activities as volunteers

 

Other

  • To carry out all work within an equal opportunities framework. To promote anti-discriminatory practice within the community and to challenge anti-social behaviour and attitudes
  • To undertake other temporary duties consistent with the basic objectives and/or main duties of the post
  • To ensure all Safeguarding practices and procedures are implemented in accordance with Mary’s Policy
  • Regularly make personal, written or verbal contact with inter-borough and external agencies, in order to increase working knowledge of services available to young people and in doing so become a more effective referral agent

 

Person Specification 

This position is for a creative, entrepreneurial and dynamic youth worker with suitable qualifications and experience matching the below requirements:

Requirements Essential Desirable
Qualifications  
A relevant degree, postgraduate certificate, diploma or master’s in Youth Work, informal education or community work *  
Certificate in Safeguarding / Child Protection *  
Experience  
Min 2 years experience in designing and / or  delivering youth projects and programmes *  
At least three years recent experience of working with young people in an informal / formal setting *  
Experience giving employment, education and / or training information, advice and guidance to young people *  
Experience of building relationships with young people and an interest and enthusiasm in supporting their personal development *  
Experience carrying out outreach to young people (face to face in the community and through social media) *  
Experience of monitoring and evaluating youth projects *
Supervision and team leadership experience *  
Abilities and Skills  
Demonstrable skills, interest and knowledge of youth work in an informal setting *  
Knowledge of education and career pathways for young people and the ability to advise and support young people in this area *  
An ability to deliver employability and life skill workshops to young people *  
Knowledge of organising and facilitating work placements and / or apprenticeships for young people *
An understanding of the issues and barriers facing inner city young people who are Not in Education, Employment or Training (NEET) *  
Knowledge of how mentoring schemes operate *
Can demonstrate excellent presentation skills to both groups and individuals in formal and informal settings *
Ability to engage and  communicate effectively with a range of audiences (young people,  session leaders,  external partners) *  
Strong written and verbal communication skills *  
Excellent interpersonal skills, in particular the ability to network and develop relationships with young people *  
Approachable, friendly and energetic approach when working with young people *  
Motivated self-starter,  with strong organisational skills and an ability  to work alone and on own initiative, but also as part of a team *  
Confident user of MS Office software with good word-processing skills *
Special interest in an area attractive to young people is desirable, e.g. arts / sports / computing / music *
Willingness to undertake appropriate training and education as part of a commitment to continued professional development *
