Job Title:                  Development Manager / Senior Youth Worker

Contract:                  12 months fixed term with the possibility of becoming permanent

Hours:                       37.5 hrs per week (including evening & occasional weekend work)

Pay:                            £31,000- £33,000 + 8% Employers pension contributions post probation

Holiday:                    4 weeks plus bank holiday

Reports to:              Chief Executive Officer

Responsible for:     Youth work staff (including sessional staff and volunteers)

 

Job purpose:

To lead Mary’s expanding youth development work so that it successfully engages the disadvantaged young people of Islington and leaves a lasting positive impact on their lives and future prospects.  Managing a team of staff, volunteers and partner agencies, the Development Manager / Senior Youth Worker will work with the Project Delivery Manager to ensure that Mary’s delivery commitments to its funders, including the National Lottery and BBC Children in Need are fully met.

Service development

  • Develop new youth initiatives and partnerships that will encourage more young people to participate in Mary’s Youth activities
  • Enhance existing youth activities so that they deliver a greater impact on the personal and social development of participating young people
  • Lead on promotional and PR/marketing activities to attract new participants to Mary’s Youth Club and to support PR campaigns to promote wider awareness of the work amongst supporters
  • Lead the team in devising new outreach initiatives that successfully engage “hard to reach” young people
  • Negotiate delivery partnerships with external organisations and  manage/appraise their performance
  • Identify and secure social entrepreneurial opportunities to grow the resources and capabilities of the service
  • Support the development of funding bids and contribute to their drafting

 

Staff management

  • Line manage and support staff and promoting a culture of learning and continuous professional development and high performance
  • Design, deliver and evaluate training and planning days which build the skills and knowledge of youth workers and young leaders
  • Complete regular appraisals and ensure compulsory training compliance
  • In conjunction with CEO lead recruitment of project staff and volunteers
  • Fulfil applicable HR responsibilities for line reports

 

Delivery & Operations

  • Account for the development of effective work plans that will achieve required service objectives
  • Take overall responsibility for the day-to-day operation of the youth club
  • Work closely with the Project Delivery Manager to support the collection of the required outcome monitoring data
  • Regularly (quarterly and annually) evaluate the performance of the service, identify areas for improvement and implement required changes
  • Jointly report with the Project Delivery Manager to the management team and the CEO on performance against agreed KPIs.
  • Propose and agree remedial plans of action with CEO where necessary
  • Ensure that financial procedures are followed at all times
  • Manage annual and project budgets of up to £100K per annum
  • Maintain a culture of controlled practice, using risk assessments to ensure all Health and Safety responsibilities are met
  • Ensure that all of Mary’s applicable policies and procedures are implemented
  • Act as Mary’s Designated Safeguarding Officer for the Youth Club fulfilling all obligations in accordance with Mary’s Safeguarding policy

 

Face to face Youth Work

  • Spend 40% of time carrying out face to face work with children and young people
  • Model exemplary youth work to staff and volunteers, personally delivering a small number of weekly engagement sessions to young people
  • Lead on co-producing Mary’s Youth club’s activities with young people
  • Consult with young people on a regular basis and maintain awareness of their changing needs as well as of changing approaches to supporting young people’s development
  • Enable young people to access the necessary resources and support them both in and outside of Mary’s so that they gain the maximum benefit from their engagement with us

 

Marketing & Communications

  • Ensure the development of a constant flow of marketing and promotional communications through Mary’s web site, social media platforms and printed materials
  • Oversee and ensure the collection of case studies that illustrate the outcomes of the service to Mary’s supporters and funders
  • Organise events that promote the work and opportunities of the Club amongst new potential young people, volunteers and supporters.
  • Work with the CEO on developing and nurturing external partnerships with private sector stakeholders to create enhanced opportunities for young people’s development and to secure sponsorships

 

Other

  • Actively collaborate with other service managers of the charity in to aid the development of the wider organisation
  • Carry out all work within an equal opportunities framework.  Promote anti-discriminatory practice within the community and to challenge anti-social behaviour and attitudes
  • Model and promote Mary’s organisational values
  • Actively seek training opportunities  to further own professional development and be diligent in completing assigned training

Person Specification

Requirements Essential Desirable
Qualifications & Training  
JNC & National Youth Agency recognised Professional Youth Worker Qualification OR

Honours degree plus NVQ Level 4 in Youth Work

Recognised leadership & management qualification *
Experience  
Proven track record in designing and successfully delivering youth projects and programmes *  
At least 5 years’ experience of working with young people in  an informal youth work setting *  
At least 3 years previous experience of staff and team leadership  & management in the youth work sector *  
Experience of monitoring and evaluation of youth projects *  
Experience of developing and nurturing external partnerships with stakeholders (private, charitable and public sectors) *  
Experience and proven track record of successful fundraising *
Experience of managing outcome-based youth service contracts *
Experience in managing youth lead enterprises *
Abilities, Skills & Knowledge  
Excellent interpersonal skills, in particular the ability to network and develop positive relationships with young people from all backgrounds *  
Strong understanding of the issues facing young people growing up in deprived communities, particularly those experiencing personal difficulties or challenges *  
Special interest/skills in an area attractive to young people is desirable, e.g. arts / sports / computing / music *
Ability to inspire, coach and mentor staff, volunteers and young people so they develop in skills and confidence *
Ability to communicate  concisely and clearly orally and in writing, with good presentation skills to a wide range of audiences *  
Good business skills and an ability to plan and manage budgets,  analyse financial information and negotiate budget variations *  
Innovative with good analytical skills to develop proposals to meet service objectives *  
Highly organised with the ability to plan and prioritise own workload and to work under pressure *  
Ability to work independently and on own initiative, but also as part of a team  
People centred, collaborative, honest, respectful and culturally aware with sound judgement and pragmatism to deal effectively with sensitive situations *
